Setting My Personal and Professional Goals | Focus is the Key in 2018

The purpose of this post is to hold myself accountable to all of you. I’ve set personal and professional goals for 15+ years, and they never feel real to me unless they’re printed/published and well known by my friends, family and co-workers.

I used to write my personal and professional goals down on an index card…but end up losing it. In 2017, I used a poster-sized vision board that I kept propped up in my office. It seemed to work and I may make one again….even though my family thinks I’m a little nuts and living up in the clouds.

Listed below are my goals broken up into 5 categories.

Family:

  1. Always say (verbally or non-verbally), “my pleasure” when you get a reasonable request from your family. Basically, don’t be a selfish bastard. You are there to serve them and to also lead by example.
  2. Promote and support a functional, friendly and fun family dynamic focused on RESPECT. We take our time and don’t verbally run over each other and revert to nuclear escalation in less than 1 minute.

Fitness:

  1. Gain strong core and embrace a lean appetite in preparation for the pilgrimage in India by 2020.
    1. Swim 2x/week
    2. Yoga 2x/week
    3. Planks 5x/week
    4. Meditate 7x/week

Financial:

  1. $____________  in annual compensation from the following sources towards achieving my “10 by 60” goal:
    1. Generate predictable recurring revenue (aka salary) from “day job” to give the family a degree of security and ability to plan trips, redecorate and buy furniture
    2. Generate project revenue from workshops, webinars and digital products via collaboration with individuals and/or media publications
    3. Investment portfolio comprised of equities, some fixed income, and crypto currencies

Business (in general):

  1. Embrace focus and discipline. Commit to less and focus more deeply. I hope this approach leads to greater discipline. More focus on fewer things should hopefully make it easier to stick to it. While I love big ideas and embracing new concepts, I often find myself chasing “bright and shiny objects.” Don’t chase bright and shiny objects…stick to your knitting….understand the difference between opportunism and distraction.

Seek out Partnerships and Collaboration:

  1. I’ve learned that it’s hard to accomplish big things without the help of others. I am so used to going it alone and I’ve always found myself flying solo. In 2017, I did experience several very good collaborations and it’s really opened my eyes to finding the right people with a similar mindset. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

Even if no one reads this, I hope that by publishing my goals on this blog, I’ll feel the accountability and deliver on my goals in a big way in 2018.

Have you set and published your goals yet?
